Americans spent 121 billion minutes on social media sites in July 2012, the Washington Post reported this week.  That, the newspaper says, translates to 230,060 years spent posting, liking and tweeting.

The numbers come from the State of the Media: Social Media Report  by Nielsen and NM Incite.  Not surprisingly, more people are spending time on social media and for longer periods of time. And, mobile is huge.

Here are the  top 10 most visited social media networks:

1. Facebook

2. Blogger (surprise!)

3. Twitter

4. WordPress

5. LinkedIn

6. Pinterest

7. Google +

8. Tumblr – up 55 percent

9. Myspace – down 13 percent

10 Wikia – up 20 percent

Twitter grew 13 percent and WordPress jumped 10 percent, while both Facebook and Blogger lost unique visitors, the report says.  The growth stars were Pinterest at an increase of 1,047 percent, and the new kid on the block Google + at 80 percent.

What is the most gross statistic in the report? Nearly a third – 32 percent- of people aged 18-24 use social media in the bathroom!
